CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — New Charlotte 49ers coach Brad Lambert says he expects to hand out about 23 or 24 scholarships on signing day Wednesday.
All of those players will be redshirted this fall.
The 49ers are starting up a new football program and don't begin play until 2013.
Lambert says this year's class will be comprised almost exclusively of high school recruits.
He says next year the strategy will change to incorporate more junior college transfers. That's designed to give the 49ers more age and experience on what would be an otherwise young roster.
He says the 49ers' goal is to build from "inside out" beginning with the offensive and defensive lines, but adds that finding a couple of quarterbacks to run the offense this fall in practice is also "crucial."
