49ers host historic first practice for walk-ons

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — For the first time ever the Charlotte 49ers held an actual football practice.

Granted, it was 57 walk-ons — some of whom didn't even play high school football — hoping to earn a spot on the roster, but it was the next important milestone for a university starting a new program from scratch. Coach Brad Lambert says a handful of kids trying out this week might have a shot to make the team, which begins play in 2013.

Lambert, who was hired 13 months ago, has been chomping at the bit to get outside and do what coaches do.

After two years of no spring football he says, "at least you get to put your stuff on, coach a little ball and work with kids to see what they got."
