CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Charlotte 49ers announced they have suspended leading scoring DeMario Mayfield indefinitely for violation of athletic department policy.
This is the third time the junior guard has been suspended by the team.
Coach Alan Major suspended him two games to start this season and one last season for violating team rules.
Athletic director Judy Rose called the suspension "disappointing" but says "our policies are in place for a reason and our student-athletes are expected to abide by them."
This is potentially a big loss for Charlotte.
At 16-4, the 49ers are competing for an NCAA Tournament bid.
Mayfield moved into the starting lineup last week against Xavier and is averaging a team-high 11.7 points with 3.6 rebounds. He's recorded 14 double-figure scoring games this season and 33 for his career.
