Surging Charlotte aiming for NCAA Tournament bid

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The young Charlotte 49ers are off to their best start in eight years and are out to prove they're worthy of an NCAA tournament bid.

The next two weeks could go a long way toward determining if they reach that goal. The 49ers (17-4, 5-2 Atlantic 10) begin a demanding four-game stretch Wednesday against conference foes Temple, VCU, No. 14 Butler and St. Louis.

Third-year coach Alan Major says that'll be akin to "climbing the walls of Jericho" for a team that starts two freshmen and two sophomores.

Major knows the task won't be any easier with leading scorer DeMario Mayfield suspended indefinitely, but says anything's possible with this team. After going 13-17 a year ago, the 49ers are 2-1 this season against teams ranked in the RPI top 50.
