Samford hands Davidson its first CAA loss, 77-74BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Jeffrey Merritt scored 20 points and Will Cook hit two free throws with 1.2 seconds remaining as Samford upset Davidson 77-74 Saturday night in Colonial Athletic Association play. For Davidson (15-5, 9-1), its first CAA loss also ended an eight-game winning streak. For Samford (7-13, 4-5), its fourth victory in five games was its first over Davidson in seven meetings. Davidson started horribly, hitting just 10 of 29 first-half shots .The Bulldogs, meanwhile, opened the game on a 14-6 run and led 42-26 at intermission. Davidson, which outscored Samford 48-35 after the break, was led by De'Mon Brooks with 20 points. But with the Wildcats trailing 73-71, Brooks missed a shot and fouled Connor Miller with 6.9 seconds left. Miller hit two free throws. But Davidson's Nik Cochran sank a quick trey and fouled Cook, who made both shots. Drew Windler scored 15 points for Samford, Cochran 18 for Davidson. |
