Duke's Carroll still hoping for return to lacrosse
DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Former Duke lacrosse All-American Casey Carroll still hopes to return to the Blue Devils after spending 4½ years in the U.S. Army.
The 28-year-old suffered a preseason knee injury that kept him out this year. So he's helping out from the sideline during home games, and plans to be there again Sunday when the Blue Devils face Loyola of Maryland in the NCAA men's lacrosse tournament.
The defenseman is the last active member of the 2006 team scarred by false rape allegations against three players. His last game was a one-goal loss in the 2007 NCAA final.
He's now a husband, father, former Army Ranger, combat veteran and graduate student.
Carroll says he appreciates just being back and is "playing with house money" by even having the chance to return.
