Hurricanes looking to end their nosedive

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — It only took a few weeks for the Carolina Hurricanes to plunge from the top of their division to near the bottom of the Eastern Conference.

The one-time Southeast Division leaders have lost six straight in regulation — three shy of the team record — while going 1-12-1 during a miserable run in which they've got only three points to show for the past four weeks.

They've set a club record with seven straight home losses. The general manager who put this team together had some harsh words for it at the trading deadline.

And with only nine games left, this former sure-thing playoff team visits Washington on Thursday trying to keep from dropping into the cellar. Carolina entered Wednesday's games with 34 points, two more than last-place Florida.
