NC State upsets FSU 7-0 in ACC tourney opener

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Matt Bergquist hit a two-run home run and two North Carolina State pitchers combined on a four-hitter to lead the Wolfpack past Florida State 7-0 on Wednesday night in their Atlantic Coast Conference tournament opener.

Bergquist's blast in the seventh inning put seventh-seeded N.C. State (34-23) up 6-0, and Cory Mazzoni and D.J. Thomas shut down the second-seeded Seminoles in a rematch of last year's ACC championship game.

Mazzoni struck out nine in seven innings before giving way to Thomas, who retired six of the seven hitters he faced.

Losing pitcher Robert Benincasa allowed one run on three hits in 3 1-3 innings. Reliever Mack Waugh gave up two earned runs in 1 1-3 innings for the Atlantic Division champion Seminoles (41-15), the reigning ACC champs.
