Group formed to bring sporting events to Charlotte
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — A new nonprofit group was formed Wednesday in Charlotte with the goal of attracting premiere national and regional sporting events to the city.
The Charlotte Sports Foundation includes leaders from the NFL's Carolina Panthers, NBA's Charlotte Bobcats and Charlotte Motor Speedway, as well as regional business, industry and civic leaders who have a track record of bringing sports and economic development to the area.
Executive director Will Webb says the foundation's mission is to "create, recruit and execute high-caliber athletic events" on par with the ACC Football championship and Belk Bowl, which are currently held in Charlotte.
Webb says the foundation also will work to secure additional professional, collegiate and amateur events that will enrich Charlotte's sports landscape.
Webb calls it a "great step forward for Charlotte."
