Holbrook hired to take over Gamecocks baseball

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Chad Holbrook has been hired as South Carolina's new baseball coach, three days after his old boss Ray Tanner named the school's athletic director.

Holbrook will take over a program that won national championships in 2010 and 2011. The Gamecocks also reached the championship round at the College World Series last month before finishing runner up to Arizona.

Holbrook has spent the past four seasons at South Carolina. He said following Tanner was the perfect opportunity for him.

Holbrook had worked on the North Carolina baseball staff for 15 seasons before coming to the Gamecocks. He helped the Tar Heels to three College World Series appearances.

Tanner spent 16 seasons as Gamecocks coach before his promotion to AD on Friday. Outgoing AD Eric Hyman leaves for Texas A&M next month.
