UNC's Williams ready to move on after cancer scare

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina coach Roy Williams says he's eager to coach this year's team after his recent cancer scare and that he hopes to continue another six to 10 years.

Speaking at the team's preseason media day Thursday, Williams described a "whirlwind 24 days" between the time doctors discovered tumors on both his kidneys and when they determined the growths were benign.

Williams had surgery to remove the tumor on his right kidney on Sept. 19. Doctors also did a biopsy on the left-kidney tumor, but didn't surgically remove it.

Williams says doctors will monitor that growth every six months for the immediate future.

Williams also says he will "smell the roses a heck of a lot more" and that he feels good. The Tar Heels open preseason practice Saturday.
