COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Ray Tanner is pleased he kept South Carolina athletics moving forward in his first year as athletic director.

Tanner says he worried the department might slow down as he took control after 16 years as the Gamecocks baseball coach. Instead, Tanner says he was able to keep most of his management team in place and the program's overall momentum going forward.

Tanner recently spoke to The Associated Press about his initial season as AD and South Carolina athletics overall.

He brought a coach's get-it-done-yesterday mentality to the job and did not want to things to bog down simply because he'd taken over when Eric Hyman left for Texas A&M last summer. He believes he's got a better grasp on things as he begins year two.
