CMPD Responds to Providence High School Death Threats
CHARLOTTE, NC – Charlotte Mecklenburg Police officers are patrolling around the clock at Providence High School. Someone posted two anonymous death threats on a social media site called Yik Yak this weekend. The most recent threat was posted Sunday. Officers did a sweep at the school but didn’t find anything. WCCB Charlotte spotted at least five police cruisers around the school Sunday.
The Charlotte Mecklenburg School District tells WCCB Charlotte that Providence High School will operate on a normal schedule Monday. However, parents say students were warned in a robocall not to congregate in the hallway. They were also reportedly warned to duck and hide if they heard noises. The District says it is taking the threats seriously and is urging students to report suspicious activities.
A group of parents organized a vigil at Providence High School Sunday to pray for protection. They say they wanted to support the students and their teachers. Several students have turned to social media to say they do not feel safe and do not plan to attend classes on Monday.
