YORK COUNTY, S.C. — More than 16 dogs were killed in an early morning fire at Richardson Rescue in York, South Carolina.

York County Fire Investigator Charles Williamson told WCCB that firefighters were called around 4:30 a.m. to the animal rescue on Garvin Road.

The dogs were being kept in kennels in a trailer on the property to keep them out of the cold weather. An additional dog being kept adjacent to the trailer also was killed.

A final count of the number of animals is not available yet. While the cause of the fire is undetermined, a space heater or an electrical problem may be to blame.
