CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man is dead after he was struck by a car in east Charlotte Wednesday night.
Officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department were called to Central Avenue near Kilborne Drive where a male pedestrian was hit and the driver of a Champagne 1998 Toyota Avalon took off.
Medic transported the victim to Atrium Health Center where he died from his injuries. His name will be released once his family has been notified.
The pedestrian was hit on the right west bound lanes of Central Avenue. According to police,, 63-year-old Ngongo Musafiri did not stop his car or notify law enforcement after the accident. A witness to the crash attempted to follow Musafiri’s vehicle, but was unable to safely identify the location.
Later, CMPD obtained car parts and video footage that helped them track down Musafiri and his Toyota Avalon. He was caught at 4361 Central Avenue. He was then transported to headquarters and arrested and charged with felony hit and run.
The Toyota was photographed and processed by the CMPD Crime Scene and is now being held as evidence.
Speed and alcohol are not contributing factors in this crash, police say.
The crash is under investigation.
