CHARLOTTE, NC — Charlotte is one of three cities among the nation’s 20 largest without an LGBT non-discrimination ordinance. Β There are 17 states and more than 200 cities and counties across the country with similar protections to what is proposed with the addendum in Charlotte.
Of the nation’s 20 largest cities by population, only Charlotte, Memphis and Jacksonville do not have civil rights protections for the LGBT community. Β In 2012, Jacksonville City Council voted down two versions of an ordinance that would add sexual orientation and gender preference. Β A city spokesman tell us there are no plans to re-introduce a similar ordinance.
The Memphis City Council approved an ordinance dealing with workplace discrimination in 2012, but has not addressed other areas.
