CHARLOTTE, N.C., — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has charged Officer Randall Kerrick with voluntary manslaughter after shooting and killing Jonathan Ferrell Saturday morning in East Charlotte.
Officers responded to a breaking and entering call after a woman called 911 and said a man she didn’t recognize was standing outside her door. When officers arrived they found Ferrell near the house, but when they approached Ferrell he began to run towards them. Officer Thornell tried to use a taser but it was unsuccessful. Officer Randall Kerrick then shot several rounds, killing Ferrell.
Ferrell was not armed with a weapon. CMPD believes Ferrell was driving a vehicle that was found wrecked down a wooded embankment and was trying to get assistance when he was killed.
Kerrick was in police custody Saturday night. He has been released on $50,000 bond.
