CHARLOTTE, N.C., — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has charged Officer Randall Kerrick with voluntary manslaughter after shooting and killing Jonathan Ferrell Saturday morning in East Charlotte.
Officers responded to a breaking and entering call after a woman called 911 and said a man she didn’t recognize was standing outside her door. Β When officers arrived they found Ferrell near the house, but when they approached Ferrell he began to run towards them. Β Officer Thornell tried to use a taser but it was unsuccessful. Β Officer Randall Kerrick then shot several rounds, killing Ferrell.
Ferrell was not armed with a weapon. Β CMPD believes Ferrell was driving a vehicle that was found wrecked down a wooded embankment and was trying to get assistance when he was killed.
Kerrick was in police custody Saturday night. He has been released on $50,000 bond.
