SHELBY,NC–It’s opening night of the Cleveland County Fair and visitors and vendors are noticing increased safety measures.

An Ecoli outbreak at last year’s fair killed a little boy and made more than 100 others sick.

Health officials traced the source to the petting zoo and this year people are not allowed to touch the animals.

There are also extra hand washing stations around the fair grounds.

165,000 people attended the fair last year and fair officials hope to set a record with 200,000 this year.

The Cleveland County Fair will run through October 4th.
