ROCK HILL, SC – “One of the girls, she was so shookin up, she was crying. It’s like – it’s unnerving,” says one neighbor.
Neighbors say the group of Winthrop students – were an easy target for masked gunmen Friday night.
“Cause they have, like, a lot of parties going on out here. And it’s like, they should be really more careful,” that neighbor says.
Sorority members tell me the group was gathered around this firepit outside a house on Ebenezer Avenue.
Three masked gunmen approached -specifically demanding their iPhones.
The girls tell me they’re too afraid to go on camera – but say one of the suspects fired a shot.
No one was hurt – though police say the gunmen got away with 11 iPhones.
“I always thought that this place was really secure, and it’s next to campus, so you’d never think that this is something may occur or happen,” says neighbor Eduardo Venegas.
Venegas lives across the street.
He says it’s upsetting because it happened even with such a large group of students around.
“They see this group of people having fun, and it’s – it’s easy to get to them because they’re distracted,” he says.
Another neighbor tells me she’s partnering with a nearby elementary school to put up a fence.
With the suspects still on the loose – she and others tell me they’re taking extra precautions.
“I’m more careful – locking up the house, making sure I have everything and my keys with me and that I can dial 911 at any time,” she says.
