CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Tough reforms for CMPD’s Citizens Review Board are close to becoming official. Some people say the changes don’t go far enough. A City Council committee approved the guideline changes Monday. They still need full City Council approval. The changes will make it easier to have a full hearing. Right now that can only happen if there’s proof an officer abused their power. The task force is recommending the CRB give a reason, in writing, why an appeal was denied. The proposal does not give the board power to conduct independent investigations,”or” require police officers to be present at hearings. The review board has heard more than 90 cases over the last 16 years. It has never sided with a victim.
