CHARLOTTE, N.C.–Crime scene tape sealed off the area where investigators searched for suspects after a shooting just feet from the Lincoln Heights Day Care in West Charlotte.

“I just hope they find out who did it,” said Lincoln Heights Day Care Owner Sharon Weathers.

Weathers was with 15 kids in the middle of nap time when she heard the gun shot. Police say 29-year-old Jason Dobie has been arrested and charged with the shooting. Investigators say he fired the shot that hit the 14-year-old boy in the arm. It happened near the intersection of Doctor Webber Avenue and Augusta Street at 12:30 p.m.

“That’s not cool. That’s not cool,” said neighbor Geneva Coleman. Coleman isn’t only concerned about the kids at the day care. Her sister and grand kids live next door to the victim. She’s outraged by what she calls a troubling increase in crime in the neighborhood.

“There’s a house full of kids here. There’s a house full of kids. House full of kids. And everyone is trying to keep their kids in. But it’s not fair to keep these kids inside,” said Coleman.

Back at the Lincoln Heights Day Care that Sharon Weathers says was the nursery for former Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx, big changes are about to take effect for the first time in 27 years.

“For a while we probably won’t be going back outside. For a while. Until they can clean this area up a little bit,” said Weathers.

Because he is a minor, police have not released the name of the victim. CMPD says the suspect knew the victim and this was not a random act of violence.
