Suspect in Custody After Officer-Involved Shooting in Gastonia

GASTONIA, N.C. — Gastonia Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that stemmed from a traffic stop on South York Road. According to authorities the incident happened at 4 p.m. on Wednesday. Police say the suspect, Larry Kitchin, charged at two officers while driving a stolen truck. The suspect’s vehicle struck the officer’s cruiser and left the scene. Officers pursued the suspect before he wrecked the truck, jumped out and ran. An officer fired a shot during the incident, but the suspect was not hit and no one was injured. The officer suffered minor injuries when he was struck while in his car.

The firing of the officer’s weapon is under investigation. Authorities say all incidents involving use of force by officers are investigated to ensure departmental police and procedures are followed. 

Kitchin is charged by Gastonia Police with two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer. He also faces charges by Gaston County Police for larceny of a motor vehicle, kidnapping and robbery with a dangerous weapon.
