SPARKS, NV – More than 150 police officers from several different agencies arrived moments after shots rang out at Sparks Middle School. The suspect, described as an Hispanic boy was dead on the scene along with Mike Landsberry, a math teacher who died trying to stop the shooter. Police are calling Landsberry a hero.
Two other male students were injured and taken to Renown Regional Medical Center.
Police say the suspect died of a self inflicted gunshot wound and that law enforcement never fired their weapons.
Students were evacuated to Sparks High School where parents picked them up. Sparks Mayor Geno Martini says that training may have kept a tragic situation from being even worse. Classes have been cancelled for the rest of the week.
A law enforcement source says the shooter used a handgun he took from his parents.
