CHARLOTTE,NC–A mother who lost her son to black tar heroin abuse is working to keep other parents from experiencing the same loss.

Alex Uhler’s family helped organize a candlelight vigil for drug awareness at Queens University Thursday night.

Uhler overdosed on the campus last year, his mom, Deanna Uhler, “i think a lot of families especially in this area think it won’t touch their families, so i’m standing here as a picture of who it can happen to,” says Uhler.

Black tar heroin use is growing in Charlotte because it’s cheap and easy to get.

Experts say Mathews, South Charlotte and Mint Hill are hot spots.
