HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. – It was a beautiful day at Lake Norman as Wilson took us behind the scenes at Duke Energy’s Cowans Ford Hydro Station at Cowans Ford Dam.
The plant has been generating electricity since 1963. Cowans Ford Dam is located on Lake Norman, the largest man made body of water in North Carolina and was specifically created for the dam. Not only does the hydro station supply electricity for the area, but the lake also supplies water for Charlotte-Mecklenburg, Davidson, Huntersville, Mooresville and Lincoln County.
Wilson had access to areas that most people never see as he went inside the dam to see how the plant works to provide electricity as well as gain a better understanding of the dam’s history.
