CHARLOTTE, N.C.–Dotha Howell is a light rail regular who is always on alert. “We live in a world now where really it’s hard to be safe anywhere, but you cannot live in fear,” said the Gastonia resident.

Howell is reacting to the robbery and brutal assault of a 24-year-old woman last Sunday around 10 p.m. CMPD Crime Stats say it’s the third robbery in the neighborhood in just the last three months.
“There’s crime everywhere. It’s going up. The only thing you can do is be more aware,” said South End Resident Ashley Roce.

C-M-P-D says the crime happened along the 1900 block here of Camden Road. “Definitely wouldn’t want to come down here at night…alone…for sure,” said Northwest Charlotte Resident Kimberly Freeman.

CMPD says Shannon Smith and Juan Tabb are now in custody. They face felony charges for the latest
robbery and beating. Even though they are now behind bars, Dotha says, she isn’t letting her guard down. “You still gotta be very cautious, and you gotta put that shield of protection up and just be aware at all times,” said Howell.

CMPD Crime Stats also show there has been a 42 percent increase in reported thefts in the same area of the South End over the last six months.
