Grand Jury Returns 4 Indictments in Best Western Death Investigation

BOONE, N.C. — A Grand Jury returned 4 indictments today in the carbon monoxide deaths of three people at the Best Western in Boone. Barry Damon Mallatere, the president of Appalachian Hospitality Management is charged with three counts of involuntary manslaughter and one count of assault inflicting serious injury. The company oversees the hotel. Three people died in room 225 last spring. Daryl and Shirley Jenkins from Washington died in there in April. 11-year-old Jeffrey Williams from Rock Hill died in that same room in June. Investigators blamed the deaths on a faulty pool heater located right below room 225.

Authorities say the motel didn’t get a permit before installing the used heater in 2011.
