CHARLOTTE, NC– A massive fire destroyed a home in Rock Hill on Thursday, killing an elderly man and injuring a woman who managed to escape.
Rock Hill Fire officials say the fire broke out on Hoyle Street in the Boyd Hill Community around noon. It took 25 firefighters nearly 40 minutes to contain it.
Witnesses say they heard a loud explosion before seeing a huge plume of black smoke.
While the house is totally destroyed, neighbors say the real loss is the man who lived there. Ninety-eight-year-old Fred Cathcart died in the fire. The woman living with him suffered serious injuries and was transported to a burn center in Winston-Salem for treatment.
Officials say Cathcart was trapped inside his burning home and was unable to get out.
Neighbors, like Sherman Marshall, say they are going to miss the kind-hearted neighbor who lived down the street.
“Everybody is going to miss him,” says Marshall.
Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused the fire.
