Charlotte-Mecklenburg made the decision to operate on a delay, a little before 3pm this afternoon. Thing is, they’re pushing school back two hours, and according to Chief Meteorologist Reg Taylor, that actually makes things worse. Kids who normally head out at, say, 6am will be out at 8am instead, and it will actually be colder then, because this Arctic Vortex doesn’t follow normal weather patterns.
And it’s not like the cold is causing travel concerns around here. It’s cold, but there’s nothing wet on the streets. In fact, it doesn’t make much sense to put slag down, since it’ll be too cold for it to work anyway: it stops being effective at 25 degrees. And it’s going to be below 25 all day, and below 15 most of the morning. So what’s the difference when kids go to school?
Our Man on the Edge, Robert Wilder, hit the frigid streets to ask: did CMS make the right call to delay school for cold?
