Move-Out Day for Silver Oak Apartment Tenants, Many Left Homeless

CHARLOTTE, NC– Friday was move out day for tenants at the Silver Oaks Apartments in East Charlotte. In November, the complex gave residents 30 days to move out, but extended the date until after the holidays.

In 2011, City Council approved a plan to build a mixed-use development where the apartments are located. Those plans were delayed until now.

It’s a move that has left hundreds of residents, like Verna Crutchfield, scrambling to find a new home.

“The past few weeks I’ve been pressed like crazy working all day, every day trying to get stuff cleared out and get ready to get out of here,” says Crutchfield. “Right now I don’t have any place to go. I have to find something.”

According to the lease agreement, property management is only required to give 30-days notice to vacate.

No word on when construction for the new development will begin.
