NC AG’s Office Taking Cop Shooting Case Back to Grand Jury

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The North Carolina Attorney General’s Office announced on Wednesday that it will resubmit the case against CMPD Officer Randall Kerrick to the grand jury.

“In the interest of justice, we will resubmit this case to the grand jury scheduled to meet Monday, January 27 to seek an indictment for voluntary manslaughter, the most appropriate charge given the facts in the case,” a release stated.

The Mecklenburg County Grand Jury declined on Tuesday to indict Officer Kerrick on charges of voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of Jonathan Ferrell.

Since the grand jury that heard the case was less than a full panel of 18 grand jurors, Attorney General Roy Cooper decided to resubmit the case to a full grand jury.

Investigators say Kerrick shot Jonathan Ferrell 10 times in east Charlotte last September.  It was later determined that Ferrell was unarmed and had been involved in a traffic accident near the area of the shooting.

Police were called to the area after Ferrell knocked on the door of a home in a neighborhood near the crash scene.  Ferrell’s family attorney says he was looking for help.

Ferrell’s family has already filed a lawsuit against the city of Charlotte, the county, Officer Kerrick and Police Chief Rodney Monroe.

Kerrick has been charged with voluntary manslaughter. If convicted, he could face up to 11 years in prison.
