MONROE, NC- The fight against Union County redistricting—getting political.
Union County leaders are stepping up to help parents combat plans to move more than 6,000 students to new schools.
The Wesley Chapel Village Council approved a resolution Tuesday night opposing Union County Public Schools’ redistricting plan.
Hundreds of parents showed up to hear from the Mayor, who says it’s unacceptable to split up neighborhoods and move students to lower performing schools.
“I’ve literally gotten dozens of e-mails and calls every day about this issue,” said Mayor Brad Horvath. The council said the resolution is not an attack on Union County Public Schools, but instead a peaceful and positive way to stand behind the community’s cry.
“This is a big change. We’re really not in favor of it. Can we sit down and talk about it?” said Horvath.
The resolution says more than 30 neighborhoods will be affected, and many split up.
It also talks about the hit on property values and loss of tax revenue.
“It’s our futures, our financial futures, our kids futures. And nothing is more important than that,” said Mark Seiler, a Wesley Chapel resident.
The Council also says it’s unacceptable that students will be forced to move from high performing schools to lower performing schools.
As the resolution calls for alternative options, frustrated parents hope the words will turn to action.
“I hope everyone can see between the lines and put a little more reason to the situation. Nothing negative, I know it’s not easy, but it’s hard to figure something out. Let’s just not let the kids be affected,” said Burke Mckinney, a Waxhaw resident.
