Oh, the plight of the loner utensil. Just as good as all the others, but ahead of its time. They’re the straws and toothpicks and napkins and spoons that someone else popped out of the dispenser first… so when you come across one, do you pick it, or pull a different one out?
The problem is, if you’re not picking up those strays, a lot of them get wasted. In fact, up to 40 billion plastic spoons and forks are thrown out every year. And each of us use around 2,200 napkins per year. That’s not even counting the ones you skip over at the dispenser. Add with the unwanted toothpicks and straws and stuff, and there’s a lot being wasted.
The “fresh pickers” tend to say they don’t want anything that anyone else has touched… but let’s get real. In the world of all-you-can-eat buffets, your food and utensils and straws and stuff are being exposed to somebody, somewhere before you can get to them.
Our Man on the Edge, Robert Wilder, can’t stand for anyone to touch his stuff first! But can you?
