UNION COUNTY, NC – A game changer in Union County as the battle against school redistricting heats up.
On Monday night, Union County Commissioners got a standing ovation from parents after approving an allocation of $2.9 million to the Union County Board of Education.
“Stop the disruption of the lives of so many students, families and neighborhoods throughout our county,” said Vice Chairman Jerry Simpson.
Commissioners want the money to go toward the purchase of 49 mobile classrooms. The option could delay redistricting for up to five years.
“This can buy us some time,” said Gary Sides, a Monroe resident.
“I’m ecstatic. This redistricting proposal has brought so much stress to my friends and my own family,” said Sandy Simpson, a Stallings resident.
Now, Sides says there’s no excuse for the public school system to continue moving more than six thousand students to new schools.
“Now they have a viable alternative and they have the funding to be able to implement that alternative so I don’t see any reason why they wouldn’t,” said Sides.
After the big momentum shift, parents have a message for the Board of Education. “We’ll see you tomorrow night,” said Simpson.
The Board of Education will meet Tuesday night at Marvin Ridge High School. The meeting starts at 7p.m.
