CHARLOTTE, N.C. –Β Subway sandwiches said Wednesday it is in the process of removing a controversial ingredient from its bread. Β The announcement comes after a Charlotte blogger known as the “Food Babe” launched a petition onΒ TuesdayΒ to get Subway to stop using the ingredient.Β
Β
The petition has more than 69,000 signatures and counting. Β Vani Hari says there are numerous health studies that show azodicarbonamideΒ could cause asthma or even cancer. In addition to bread, Hari says the chemical is also used in yoga mats and shoe soles.
Β
She got an email from Subway’s corporate office WednesdayΒ afternoon and spoke with WCCB shortly after. Β Hari says,Β “I was a little bit surprised. But it’s really a testament to the power the people have. Β I’m just so happy that they are making this decision but I wanna make sure people know that these sandwiches still have this chemical in them. Β These changes are yet to come. They said they’re coming soon.”Β
Β
Subway sent WCCB a statement saying, “We are already in the process of removing the chemical as part of our bread improvement efforts despite the fact that it is (sic)Β USDA and FDA approved ingredient. The complete conversion to have this product out of the bread will be done soon.”
Β
WCCB asked Subway when it started the process of removing the chemical and when the conversion will be finished. Β We are waiting to hear back. Β Hari says the company does not use the chemical in its UK, EU or Australian products.Β
