Β CHARLOTTE, NC –Β The winter weather wreaked havoc on Charlotte roads.

Across the city Wednesday night, Β people were pushing cars stuck on major interstates. Roads were coated with a thick layer of snow and ice.

“It’s thick and icy out here, that’s for sure,” said William Bodenhammer, a Dilworth resident.
Some drivers were forced leave their cars and walk home.Β
Β
“Pulled in and parked, and that’s where it’s going to stay for a couple of nights,” said Alex Mattar, a Plaza Midwood resident.
Β
Interstates and highways, usually gridlocked at rush hour, were shut down.Β
Β
“We did expect for them to clear the roads a little bit and put more salt on it with our tax dollars, but didn’t happen like that!” said Michael Moore, a West Charlotte resident.
Β
At one point, the city was at a stand-still after crews shut down East Independence, both directions of I-277 and the flyover ramp from I-77 south to I-485 Outer.
Β
“We actually expected it to be a lot clearer. We figured they would clear the roads a lot better,” said Moore.
Β
Into the night, major highways and Β interstates like I-77, I-85. and Independence Boulevard were still covered in sheets of ice and snow.Β
Β
Hundreds of cars were towed Wednesday, but are others were still stranded Wednesday night.
State and local crews are working around the clock through the storm.
Β
NCDOT has a full force of 69 employees and more than 100 trucks on the road until the storm ends.Β
