CHARLOTTE, NC– Since Tuesday, Mother Nature has been wreaking havoc all over the region, including Charlotte. As road crews continue to plow major roadways, sidewalks remain packed with several inches of snow, making them difficult to walk down. The concern now: people walking in the streets.
For visiting Atlanta resident, Destiny Hill, it’s nearly impossible to walk down the icy, snow-covered sidewalks, so like many area residents, she is taking to the streets on foot. “I’m a little worried, but there’s enough for two cars, so I’m hoping they will see me and give me a little courtesy,” says Hill.
Some people we saw were walking against traffic, some traveling with it and on major roads, like Independence Boulevard and Providence Road. Cotswold resident Devin Derryll says as crazy and dangerous as it is, he sees why so many are trading a snow-packed sidewalk for some cold, hard pavement. “Once you get on the sidewalks and you see how icy they are, it seems like a better idea the further you go down it,” says Derryll.
City officials advise that if you are out walking over the next few days, wear bright, reflective clothing, and walk on the sidewalks if possible.
