CHARLOTTE, NC – Prosecutors say the search for a storage locker full of drugs could be the motive behind a gruesome 2008 triple-murder.  Justin Hurd is on trial in the deaths of Kinshasa Wagstaff, her boyfriend Kevin Young,. and Wagstaff’s niece Jasmine Hines.

Investigators say Wagstaff and Young were bound and shot inside their home on Patricia Ryan Drive, before it was set on fire.  Police found 18-year old Hines shot to death inside a car in Huntersville a few hours later.

In opening statements, prosecutors said surveillance video shows Hurd at nearby convenience stores, where his suspected accomplice Nate Sanders bought gas and lighters.  “You’re also gonna hear that that man right there, Justin Hurd’s, DNA was at both crime scenes,” said Assistant District Attorney Reed Hunt.

But Hurd’s defense team argues there’s no time-stamp on DNA.  “No eyewitnesses are gonna come in here and implicate Mr. Hurd in any bad act. It’s, it’s not going to happen,” said Defense Attorney Alan Bowman.

Kinshasa Wagstaff’s father broke down on the witness stand.  He told prosecutors his daughter’s boyfriend Kevin Young was a known drug dealer and he even saw him with large amounts of marijuana.
