KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – Another day, and no arrests in the violent attack on 15-month-old Malaya Heun. Kannapolis police say they are waiting on lab and autopsy results before they put the person–or people–responsible in handcuffs. Β “I want them to pay for the simple fact it’s my baby and I won’t ever get her back,” says Christy Heun through tears.

She is the toddler’s mother. This is the first on-camera interview she has granted. Β She was at work the day Malaya was beaten. Β The toddler was in the care of Christy’s sister and the sister’s fiance. Β “My sister called me and told me to call 911, and I asked her what was going on, and she said the baby’s unresponsive,” says Heun. Β She continues, “I’ve talked to my sister a couple times after it happened, but I haven’t talked to her since, and I just don’t understand it.”
Β
Police say there are inconsistencies in the couple’s story about what happened that day. Β Search warrants reveal the little girl had seven broken ribs, bruising on her head and body, a broken clavicle, and torn intestines. Β Investigators say some of the abuse may have taken place over a period of time–not just one attack.
Β
Heun tells WCCB she has no gut feeling on what happened to her daughter. Β She is no longer working full time, and says she can’t sleep or eat. Β She says even when she gets answers, she will never be whole again. Β Heun says, “I just don’t understand. I wanna know why.”Β
Β
WCCB has reached out to Heun’s sister and her fiance for their side of the story and have not yet heard back.Β
