CATS To Begin Phase 2 Development on CityLYNX Gold Line

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte Area Transit System received approval from the Federal Transit Administration to begin developing the second phase of the CityLYNX Gold Line.

The CityLYNX Gold Line is a 10 mile streetcar system being constructed in phases.  The first phase, which is currently under construction, will provide a 1.5 mile route from the Charlotte Transportation Center to Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center.

The second phase will connect the Charlotte Transportation Center to Johnson C. Smith University.  It will also connect Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center to Sunnyside Avenue.

The approval from the FTA comes on the heels of Charlotte City Council’s authorization for the City Manager to use $12 million to advance the project to at least 65 percent.

In September, CATS can submit a Small Starts grant application for approximately $63 million to execute the project.  That means the $12 million spent to advance the design will be eligible for reimbursement upon approval of the grant submission in September.
