Upsets send Oklahoma and Villanova home early…Creighton rolls

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Baylor opened a 21-point lead and upset 17th-ranked Oklahoma 78-73 in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 tournament. The Sooners made just 12 of 35 attempts from 3-point land as the Bears won their fifth in a row.

NEW YORK (AP) — That upset followed an even bigger stunner in the Big East tournament. Third-ranked Villanova, which had hopes of a No. 1 seed in the upcoming NCAA tournament, fell to unranked Seton Hall 64-63 as Sterling Gibbs hit a step-back jumper at the buzzer for the Pirates.

NEW YORK (AP)— It would appear the biggest beneficiary of Villanova’s upset is the 14th-ranked Creighton (KRAY’-tuhn) Bluejays. Doug McDermott poured in 35 points as Creighton bopped DePaul 84-62 to reach Friday night’s Big East semifinals and would appear to have a much easier route to the Big East title with Villanova out.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Xavier Thames (TEHMZ), the Mountain West Conference player of the year, had 15 points and seven assists in as San Diego State put on a clinic to welcome Utah State to its first Mountain West tournament. The eighth-ranked Aztecs shot 52.5 percent from the field, hitting 7 of 17 from 3-point range, in routing the Aggies 73-39 to reach the Mountain West semifinals against UNLV, which defeated Wyoming 71-67.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Jonathan Martin is officially a member of the San Francisco 49ers. Martin passed his physical yesterday to complete a trade that sent the offensive tackle from the Miami Dolphins to the Niners to be reunited with his college coach, Jim Harbaugh.
