LeBron’s 43 lead Heat

UNDATED (AP) — LeBron James and Dwyane (dwayn) Wade have combined to average 46 points for the Miami Heat this season. With Wade sitting out Tuesday’s game at Cleveland to rest his sore knees, James picked up the slack by scoring 43 points in the Heat’s 100-96 win over the Cavaliers.

James contributed 25 points while the Heat outscored the Cavs 37-25 in the first quarter. He also hit six free throws in the final two minutes to help Miami win for just the third time in eight games.

James set a career high and a team record by scoring 61 points against Charlotte on March 3, the last time Wade sat out a game.

Chris Bosh added 21 points for the Heat, who are three games behind the Eastern Conference-leading Indiana Pacers.

Also in the NBA:

— Wesley Matthews had 26 points, including a key 3-pointer in overtime to lift Portland over Milwaukee 120-115. Robin Lopez added 15 points and 14 rebounds in the Blazers’ second victory in seven games.

— Stephen Curry had 23 points and fellow guard Klay Thompson scored 20 points in Golden State’s 103-89 romp over Orlando. The backcourt duo sparked an 18-4 run at the start of the second half that put the Warriors ahead by 24 points.

— Jeff Teague (teeg) equaled his career best with 34 points and Atlanta picked up its season-high fifth straight win by downing Toronto 118-113 in overtime. Hawks forward Paul Millsap had 19 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists for his first career triple-double.

— Isaiah Thomas also recorded his first triple-double with 24 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists to help Sacramento beat Washington 117-111 in overtime. DeMarcus Cousins and Rudy Gay each added 24 points for the Kings, who rallied in the fourth to send the game into overtime and snapped a two-game losing streak.

NBA-KNICKS

Jackson introduced as Knicks boss

NEW YORK (AP) — Phil Jackson says he sees a future for Carmelo Anthony with the New York Knicks. The newly appointed president of the team met with reporters and said he is looking forward to leading the franchise with which he started his NBA career. Jackson played for the Knicks when they won the NBA championship in 1970 and 1973. They haven’t won a title since.

After successful stints as the head coach of the Bulls and Lakers, where he won a combined 11 NBA titles, Jackson said he’s ready for the challenge of rebuilding the New York team.

The futures of Anthony and coach Mike Woodson have been uncertain this year as the Knicks have floundered for most of the season.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL-NCAA TOURNAMENT

Great night for Great Danes

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — North Carolina State and Albany have advanced to the second round of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament by winning in Dayton on Tuesday.

T.J. Warren scored 16 of his 25 points in the second half and the Wolfpack led most of the way in a 74-59 victory over Xavier. Ralston Turner added 17 points to help N.C. State earn a meeting with Saint Louis in Orlando.

D.J. Evans scored 22 points, including a pair of free throws with 12.6 seconds left as the Great Danes earned a 71-64 win over Mount St. Mary’s. Peter Hooley had 20 points and Gary Johnson 13 for Albany, winless in its three previous NCAA trips before advancing to Thursday’s action versus top-ranked Florida.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL-AUBURN

Pearl lands at Auburn

AUBURN, Alabama (AP) — Former Tennessee basketball coach Bruce Pearl has taken the same position at Auburn as he tries to revive a program that hasn’t been to the NCAA tournament since 2003.

He took the Vols to the NCAA tournament in each of his six seasons before getting fired three years ago in the wake of an NCAA investigation. Pearl was cited for unethical conduct for lying to investigators in June 2010 about improperly hosting recruits at his home.

He was placed under a three-year show-cause penalty by the NCAA, which expires in late August. Pearl was barred from recruiting during that span, and the Tigers have 30 days to ask the NCAA to remove that penalty.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL-COACHING NEWS

Boston College, Montana State and Washington State looking for coaches

BOSTON (AP) — Steve Donahue has been fired as Boston College’s basketball coach. The Eagles never reached the NCAA tournament during Donahue’s four years at the school, going 8-for-24 this year and 54-76 overall.

Washington State has dismissed men’s basketball coach Ken Bone after five seasons and a record of 80-86. In Pac 12 play he was just 29-61 with no appearances in the NCAA tournament during his tenure.

And Montana State basketball coach Brad Huse has resigned after eight seasons and a 107-133 mark.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL-NIT

NIT begins

UNDATED (AP) — The NIT opened on Tuesday.

Robert Morris beat St. John’s 89-78, Florida State topped Florida Gulf Coast 58-53, Georgetown was a 77-65 winner against West Virginia and Missouri downed Davidson 85-77.

Arkansas thumped Indiana State 91-71, Belmont earned an 80-65 win against Green Bay, Minnesota eliminated High Point 88-81 and Clemson knocked out Georgia State 78-66.

The final game of the night had Saint Mary’s beating Utah 70-58.

B’s stretch streak, Pens keep pace

UNDATED (AP) — The Boston Bruins have tied the NHL’s longest winning streak of the season while maintaining their five-point lead over second-place Pittsburgh in the Eastern Conference.

Brad Marchand and Jarome Iginla (ih-GIHN’-luh) scored 59 seconds apart early in the second period before the Bruins completed their 10th consecutive victory, 4-2 at New Jersey. Patrice Bergeron (pah-TREES’ BEHR’-zhur-ahn) and Chris Kelly also scored and Chad Johnson made 20 saves as the B’s dealt the Devils their third straight loss.

The Penguins kept pace as Sidney Crosby scored twice and had an assist to lead a 5-1 verdict over Dallas. Lee Stempniak (STEHMP’-nee-ak) scored his first goal as a Penguin and added two assists, while Chris Kunitz (KOO’-nihts) had a goal and an assist in his return from a lower body injury.

Meanwhile, the St. Louis Blues still lead the West by four points following losses by Anaheim and San Jose.

Alex Ovechkin’s league-leading 46th goal of the season snapped a 2-2 deadlock early in the third period of Washington’s 3-2 victory at Anaheim. Jaroslav Halak handled 46 shots as the Capitals earned their third straight win to pull into a tie with Columbus for the final Eastern Conference playoff berth.

Roberto Luongo turned back 52 shots and Florida beat San Jose 3-2 to end the Sharks’ six-game winning streak. Brandon Pirri had a goal and an assist while the Panthers scored three straight in the second period.

— Philadelphia beat Chicago 3-2 on Claude Giroux’s (juh-ROOZ’) goal at 4:55 of overtime. Scott Hartnell scored twice as the Flyers improved to 10-2-1 in their last 13 games.

— Montreal won its third straight and ruined Patrick Roy’s (wahz) return to the city as Thomas Vanek scored his first three goals as a Canadien in a 6-3 victory over Colorado. It was Roy’s first trip to Montreal since he was hired to coach the Avalanche.

— Derick Brassard and Rick Nash each scored twice to lead the New York Rangers’ 8-4 rout of Ottawa. The game was tied until Benoit Pouliot (BEHN’-wah POO’-lee-aht), John Moore and Ryan McDonagh scored during the last 4:12 of the second period.

— Gustav Nyquist scored twice and Daniel Alfredsson provided the eventual game-winner as Detroit nipped Toronto 3-2. Jimmy Howard stopped 31 shots and blanked the Maple Leafs until the 8:24 mark of the third period.

— Anton Khudobin (KUH’-doh-bihn) made a career-high 46 saves and linemates Patrick Dwyer and Andrei Loktionov (lahk-tee-AH’-nahv) each had a goal and an assist in Carolina’s 3-1 win at Columbus. The Blue Jackets suffered their first regulation loss in five games despite outshooting the Hurricanes 19-0 in the third period.

— Ilya Bryzgalov (IHL’-yah brihz-GAH’-lahv) stopped 36 shots and Minnesota won for just the second time in seven games by blanking the Islanders 6-0 in New York. Matt Moulson scored twice and had three points in his first game against the Islanders since being traded earlier this season.

— Edmonton beat Nashville 5-1 as Jordan Eberle supplied a pair of third-period goals and one assist. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins added a goal and two assists to help the Oilers improve to 10-4-3 in their last 17 games.

— Calgary won for the ninth time in 11 home games by limiting Buffalo to 14 shots in a 3-1 triumph over the Sabres. Mike Cammalleri (kam-ah-LEHR’-ee) snapped a 1-1 tie midway through the final period before Paul Byron added a short-handed goal.

Irsay in treatment facility

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The family of Colts owner Jim Irsay says that he has placed himself in a treatment facility after police found multiple prescription drugs in his vehicle during a traffic stop. The 54-year-old Irsay faces preliminary charges of misdemeanor driving while intoxicated and four felony counts of possession of a controlled substance. He was arrested near his home in suburban Carmel late Sunday and released the next day.

NFL-PANTHERS

Newton faces surgery

UNDATED (AP) — Carolina quarterback Cam Newton will undergo surgery Wednesday on his left ankle and will be sidelined for four months. The team says the three-year NFL veteran has experienced soreness in the ankle since the end of last season.

— The New England Patriots have announced the re-signing of wide receiver Julian Edelman, who caught a career-high 105 passes with six touchdowns after Wes Welker left for the Denver Broncos before last season. The announcement came three days after a post on Edelman’s Twitter account said, “Foxboro is home. Excited to be back.” The Patriots did not disclose details of the contract, reportedly worth $17 million over four years.

— The Dallas Cowboys have agreed to terms with Henry Melton, the third defensive lineman to join them in free agency since the release of franchise sacks leader DeMarcus Ware.

— Mario Manningham is returning to the New York Giants after two seasons with San Francisco.

— The Jacksonville Jaguars have signed free agent receiver Tandon Doss, who led the NFL in punt return average last season with 15.6 yards.

— Safety Brandon Meriweather has re-signed with the Washington Redskins.

— The Panthers have announced the signing of two-time Pro Bowl selection and unrestricted free agent safety Roman Harper to a two-year contract.

— The New Orleans Saints have re-signed receiver Joseph Morgan for one year and have agreed to a four-year deal with free agent fullback Erik Lorig (LOHR’-ihg).

— And free-agent guard Richie Incognito has made his first public comments since undergoing treatment in the wake of the team’s bullying scandal, tweeting that he looks forward to landing a spot with an NFL team as soon as possible.

Woods pulls out with back pain

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The upcoming Arnold Palmer Invitational will be without its marquee attraction.

Tiger Woods said on his website Tuesday he called Palmer to say he won’t be able to play because of persistent back pain. Woods is the defending champion at Bay Hill and an eight-time winner at one of his favorite courses. He says it was too early to say how he will be for the Masters next month.

Woods withdrew from the Honda Classic in the final round three weeks ago. He played the following week at Doral and said he felt back spasms during the final round on his way to a 78, the highest score he has shot in a final round.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL-GEORGIA

Four players busted for cashing checks

ATLANTA (AP) — Four Georgia football players have been released on bond following their arrests Monday on misdemeanor charges of theft by deception. University of Georgia chief of police Jimmy Williamson says an investigation found that starting safety Tray Matthews, defensive linemen Jonathan Taylor and James DeLoach, received double payments for stipend checks of $71.50 issued by the Georgia athletic department.

Williamson says the players deposited the paper checks through a mobile device and also cashed the checks at a convenience store.

Wide receiver Uriah LeMay was charged with cashing a roommate’s check after the check already had been deposited through a mobile app.
