Potential Front Runners Emerging for Next CLT Mayor

CHARLOTTE, NC – Charlotte’s next Mayor could be chosen, not at the ballot box, but at a special City Council meeting Monday night. “I think moving swiftly, as quickly as we can on this, is important for the community,” says City Council Member David Howard.

The candidate must be a Democrat- and would serve the last 20 months of Patrick Cannon’s term. Over the weekend several outsiders have emerged as potential candidates.

State Senator Dan Clodfelter tells me he’d accept the position if it’s offered. Several Republicans and Democrat Claire Fallon like his chances and think he may have enough votes.

Another option is former County Commission Chair Jennifer Roberts. In the past day- supporters have started a grassroots campaign for her on social media. Roberts tells me she would focus on restoring trust and faith in city government and would be willing to take the job.

Former City Council member James Mitchell could also be in the running. Mitchell lost the Democratic nomination for Mayor to Patrick Cannon last year.

Of the City Council members WCCB has been able to reach – Claire Fallon, John Autry, and Mayor Pro Tem Michael Barnes say they aren’t interested.

“I have no plans of seeking the office. I’m busy enough doing this now,” Barnes says.

Council member, Greg Phipps says he would take the mayoral seat if offered.
