CHARLOTTE,NC–CMPD have arrested a man in connection with a sexual assault dating back to the early 80’s.
July 6th, 1980 a victim reported an sexual assault after a man broke into her apartment on University City Boulevard, sexually assaulted her and stole several things from her apartment before fleeing.
The victim was driven to the hospital where a sexual assault kit was completed.
After The Sexual Assault Cold Case Unit reviewed and submitted a request for DNA testing they recovered a match on Oct 15, 2013.
Detectives Identified the man as Timothy Ray Benfield, 52, and charged him with 1st degree rape, 1st degree sex offense, 1st degree burglary, and 2nd degree kidnapping and robbery with a dangerous weapon.
