Kiwanis Park Gets New Sculpture From Artist Mike Roig

HICKORY,NC–New public art will complement a Hickory playground.

Sculptor, Mike Roig, worked with Hickory’s Public Art Commission to produce a piece called “Zahra’s Whirled.”

Zahra’s Whirled is a 8-foot-tall sculpture that resembles a pinwheel.

“This new sculpture will be a wonderful complement to the Zahra Baker All Children’s Playground at Kiwanis Park,” said Mack McLeod, Director of Hickory’s Parks and Recreation Department. “This artistic piece is a beautiful enhancement to this already special playground.” McLeod added, “I encourage people to visit the playground and see the sculpture, and enjoy the amenities that are there. It is one of the City’s most utilized playgrounds, due to the vibrant and fun equipment, not forgetting that children of all abilities can play there together.”

The sculpture created by Roig spins in the wind on a vertical axis and was about a year and a half old before given it’s new home of Kiwanis Park.
