Β CHARLOTTE, NC — Friday’s first pitch was an Uptown homecoing for Charlotte baseball. Β Baseball in Uptown dates all the way back to 1940. Β That’s when the Calvin Griffith Park opened on Magnolia Avenue, with a team called the Charlotte Hornets. Β
In the late ’70s, the ballpark got an upgrade and a new name: The Jim Crockett, Sr. Memorial Park. Β The wooden ballpark burned in ’85.
Five years later, the Knights moved into “The Castle” in Fort Mill. Β The minor league team played there for 23 years. Β In 2012, after years of delays and legal battles, the Charlotte Knights broke ground on the Uptown ballpark. Β Two years later, here we are.
