Β GILBERT, SC — The spring cold snap has farmers covering strawberries, but damage to peach crops is already done after a freeze in late March. Β Some farmers say the extended wintry weather destroyed up to 75 percent of their peach crops. Β Agriculture officials say peaches will still be available this year, it’s just a matter of when.
“You might normally look for peaches the first of June. Β Now, look for them in the middle of June,” said South Carolina Agriculture Commissioner Hugh Weathers.
Agriculture officials estimate farmers in the Palmetto state will take a $15 million hit because of the drastic weather changes this year.
