ST. LOUIS (AP) — Alexander Steen scored 26 seconds into the third overtime to give the St. Louis Blues a 4-3 win over the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks last night in the longest game in Blues history. Game 2 is Saturday afternoon, also in St. Louis.

DENVER (AP)— Paul Stastny (STAHS’-nee) was the hero for the Colorado Avalanche in their 5-4 win over upset-minded Minnesota last night. Stastny forced overtime with a goal with 13.4 seconds left in regulation and he ended it with a goal 7:27 into overtime.

NEW YORK (AP)— The New York Rangers routed Philadelphia 4-1 in their playoff series opener for their ninth straight victory over the Flyers at Madison Square Garden. The Rangers held Philadelphia to one shot on goal in the final period.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Adam Wainwright tossed a two-hitter in pitching the St. Louis Cardinals past Washington 8-0 for his seventh career shutout. Matt Adams drove in three runs for the Cardinals, who were aided by four Nationals errors. Washington leads the majors with 20 errors in 16 games.

UNDATED (AP) — The NBA is taking a couple days off to prepare for its second season. The playoffs start Saturday with four games: Brooklyn at Toronto, Golden State at the L.A. Clippers, Atlanta at Indiana and Memphis at Oklahoma City.
