Cubs hosting Reds this afternoon
UNDATED (AP) โ In the lone day game in baseball today, the Cubs are home to the Reds. The pitching matchup has Alfredo Simon going for Cincinnati with Jeff Samardzija (suh-MAHR’-juh) toeing the rubber for the Cubs. Record-wise, the Reds are 6-9 while the Cubs are 4-10.
The busy schedule of evening games is led by a good pitching match in Washington as the Nationals entertain the Cardinals. Gio Gonzalez, who is 2-1, gets the ball for the Nationals against 2-0 Michael Wacha (WAH’-kuh). The remaining games feature the Brewers in Pittsburgh, Cleveland hosting Toronto, the Angels in Detroit, Boston at home to the Orioles, the Braves in New York to face the Mets, the Rays entertaining the Yankees, Seattle at Miami, the White Sox at Texas, Kansas City home to Minnesota, the Phillies at Colorado, Houston at Oakland, L.A.’s Dodgers home to Arizona and the Giants in San Diego.
NHL PLAYOFFS-SCHEDULE
Bruins and Red Wings open post season play
UNDATED (AP) โ Three more Stanley Cup playoff games are being played this evening and in Boston the Bruins, the top seed in the Eastern Conference, start play with a game against Detroit. The Red Wings finished the regular season as the eighth seed in the East. During the regular season the Wings won three of the four games the teams played. The last time these teams met in the playoffs was way back in 1957 when Dwight Eisenhower was president and Elvis Presley was buying Graceland at the age of 22.
The other two games are the second in those series. Montreal took the first game against the Lightning 5-4 in overtime and tonight they play Game 2 in Tampa, while in Anaheim the Ducks look to go up 2-0 against Dallas after winning the opening game 4-3.
NBA PLAYOFFS
Final day of rest
UNDATED (AP) โ The National Basketball Association gets back to business tomorrow with the start of the playoffs. Four games will take place with Brooklyn playing at Toronto, Golden State is in Los Angeles to face the Clippers, Atlanta’s playing at Indiana and Memphis is at Oklahoma City.
PGA-RBC HERITAGE
Second round in progress
HILTON HEAD, S.C. (AP) โ Second round play in the PGA’s RBC Heritage tournament is underway in Hilton Head, S.C. The lead after the first 18 holes was shared by Matt Kuchar (KOO’-chur), Scott Langley and William McGirt at 5-under.
The second round hasn’t been good for Langley and McGirt as Langley is 5-over for the day after 11 holes while McGirt is 4-over after 12. Kuchar starts his round later in the day.
LPGA-LOTTE CHAMPIONSHIP
Stanford looks to maintain lead
KAPOLEI, Hawaii (AP) โ The third round of the LPGA’s Lotte (LOH’-tay) Championship is coming up later this afternoon. Angela Stanford shot an 8-under 64 on a wind-swept course to take a one-stroke lead at the end of play yesterday. Stanford took the lead early with five birdies in a row on the front nine and finished the day with eight birdies.
CHAMPIONS TOUR
First round play is today
DULUTH, Ga. (AP) โ The opening round of the Champions Tour event, the Greater Gwinnett Championship, starts today in Duluth, Ga. The defending champion is Bernhard Langer who finished three shots in front of Tom Lehman and Tom Pernice (pur-NEES’) Jr. This week’s event marks the debut of Miguel Angel Jimenez (AHN’-hehl hee-MEHN’-ehz) on the Champions Tour as the Spaniard turned 50 in January.
