CHARLOTTE, NC — Wednesday hundreds of athletes will compete in the Special Olympics of Mecklenburg County.  Tuesday, athletes, their families, and volunteers gathered in east Charlotte for opening ceremonies.  The kick off is like a big party at Bojangles Coliseum.  Kids get to meet other athletes, and shake hands with Charlotte mascots.  Organizers say there’s a lot of planning that goes into the four-day event.

“So I think we’re going to get a good showing for our athletes,” said organizer Greg Morrill.  “They deserve the recognition, to show how hard they’ve worked.  So we’re looking forward to having the community come out.”

Wednesday, Charlotte Country Day School will host the Special Olympics track and field meet.  The softball teams will also square off.
